Hyderabad: Auto-rickshaw fares in Telangana are set to increase after the state government revised the tariff structure for the first time in 14 years. Under the new system, the minimum fare has been fixed at ₹30 for the first 1.6 kilometres, followed by ₹14 for every additional kilometre.
The Telangana government issued the revised fare order on Friday, changing the existing tariff structure that has remained in place for several years. The revised rates will apply across the state, including Hyderabad.
Under the new tariff, the auto meter will register a minimum fare of ₹30 when the journey begins. After the first 1.6 kilometres, passengers will be charged ₹14 for every additional kilometre. Existing digital meters will have to be reset to the revised tariff within three months.
Passengers travelling between 11 pm and 5 am will be charged at 1.5 times the normal fare. The revised system also provides for certain luggage charges subject to specified conditions. Until digital meters are reset, auto-rickshaws will have to display tariff cards showing the existing and revised fare structures.
Auto unions, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. According to the Times of India report, the unions had demanded a minimum fare of ₹40 and ₹18 for every additional kilometre.
The fare revision is expected to directly affect daily commuters in Hyderabad who depend on autorickshaws for short-distance and last-mile transportation. The new tariff is therefore likely to increase commuting expenses for passengers once the revised rates are implemented through the meter system.
