గ్రేటర్ హైదరాబాద్లో భూగర్భ జలాల పరిస్థితి ఆందోళనకరంగా మారిందని కేంద్ర జలశక్తి మంత్రిత్వ శాఖ విడుదల చేసిన డైనమిక్ గ్రౌండ్ వాటర్ రిసోర్స్ అసెస్మెంట్ రిపోర్ట్-2025 వెల్లడించింది. తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్ర జనాభాలో దాదాపు మూడో వంతు మంది నివసిస్తున్న హైదరాబాద్ మహానగరానికి రాష్ట్ర మొత్తం భూగర్భ జల వనరుల్లో కేవలం 3 శాతం మాత్రమే అందుబాటులో ఉన్నట్లు నివేదిక పేర్కొంది.
నివేదిక ప్రకారం తెలంగాణలో ఏడాదికి సగటున 19.8 లక్షల హెక్టార్ మీటర్ల భూగర్భ జల వనరులు ఉండగా, హైదరాబాద్, మేడ్చల్-మల్కాజిగిరి, రంగారెడ్డి జిల్లాల పరిధిలోని గ్రేటర్ హైదరాబాద్ ప్రాంతానికి కేవలం 66 వేల హెక్టార్ మీటర్ల నీరు మాత్రమే లభిస్తోంది. పెరుగుతున్న జనాభా, వేగవంతమైన పట్టణీకరణ కారణంగా నీటి వనరులపై తీవ్ర ఒత్తిడి పెరుగుతోంది.
హైదరాబాద్ జిల్లా పరిధిలో ఏడాదికి లభించే 6,100 హెక్టార్ మీటర్ల భూగర్భ జలాల్లో 2025 నాటికే దాదాపు 99 శాతం వినియోగించబడినట్లు నివేదిక వెల్లడించింది. 40 లక్షలకు పైగా జనాభా గల నగరంలో గృహ, వాణిజ్య అవసరాల కోసం భారీ స్థాయిలో భూగర్భ జలాలను వినియోగించడం వల్ల సహజ రీఛార్జ్కు అవకాశాలు తగ్గిపోయాయి.
మరోవైపు మేడ్చల్-మల్కాజిగిరి జిల్లాలో అందుబాటులో ఉన్న 9,700 హెక్టార్ మీటర్ల నీటిలో ఇప్పటికే 7,700 హెక్టార్ మీటర్లు వినియోగించబడినట్లు నివేదిక పేర్కొంది. ఇదే పరిస్థితి కొనసాగితే భవిష్యత్తులో తీవ్రమైన నీటి కొరత ఎదురయ్యే ప్రమాదం ఉందని నిపుణులు హెచ్చరిస్తున్నారు.
నగరంలో కేవలం 15 శాతం ప్రాంతాల్లో మాత్రమే సమర్థవంతమైన రైన్ వాటర్ హార్వెస్టింగ్ వ్యవస్థలు ఉన్నాయని అధికారులు అంచనా వేస్తున్నారు. కాంక్రీటీకరణ పెరగడం, ఖాళీ భూములు తగ్గిపోవడం, వర్షపు నీరు భూమిలోకి ఇంకే అవకాశాలు లేకపోవడం వల్ల భూగర్భ జలాల పునరుద్ధరణ దెబ్బతింటోందని నిపుణులు చెబుతున్నారు.
భవిష్యత్తులో నీటి సంక్షోభాన్ని నివారించాలంటే రైన్ వాటర్ హార్వెస్టింగ్, ఇంకుడు గుంతల నిర్మాణం, భూగర్భ జలాల సంరక్షణపై ప్రభుత్వం మరియు ప్రజలు ప్రత్యేక దృష్టి పెట్టాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందని నిపుణులు సూచిస్తున్నారు.

Hyderabad is facing a growing groundwater crisis, with nearly all of its available groundwater resources already being utilised, according to the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report 2025 released by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The report highlights a significant imbalance between population growth and water availability in the Greater Hyderabad region. Despite accounting for nearly one-third of Telangana’s population, Hyderabad has access to only about 3 percent of the state’s total groundwater resources.
According to the assessment, Telangana has an estimated annual groundwater availability of 19.8 lakh hectare metres. However, the Greater Hyderabad region, covering Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts, has access to only around 66,000 hectare metres of groundwater.
The report states that Hyderabad district receives approximately 6,100 hectare metres of groundwater annually, of which nearly 99 percent has already been utilised. Experts warn that such extensive extraction leaves little opportunity for natural groundwater recharge.
A similar trend has been observed in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, where nearly 7,700 hectare metres out of the available 9,700 hectare metres have already been consumed. Continued overexploitation could result in severe water scarcity in the coming years.
Experts attribute the situation to rapid urbanisation, extensive concretisation and inadequate rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Officials estimate that only around 15 percent of the city’s area has effective rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge systems.
Water resource specialists have urged both the government and citizens to prioritise rainwater harvesting, recharge pits and sustainable groundwater management to prevent a future water crisis in Hyderabad.
