మార్చి 4వ తేదీ తెల్లవారుజామున మంజు ఓమ్లతా అనే మహిళ తన కోడలితో కలిసి మార్నింగ్ వాక్కు వెళ్లారు. అదే సమయంలో డబీర్పుర ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన రౌడీ షీటర్ మహమ్మద్ సోహేల్ ఆమె మెడలోని బంగారు గొలుసును లాగేందుకు ప్రయత్నించాడు. బాధితురాలు కేకలు వేయడంతో అటుగా వెళ్తున్న ఆటోడ్రైవర్ మహమ్మద్ జాహెర్ వెంటనే స్పందించారు.
సంఘటన స్థలాన్ని దాటి వెళ్లిపోయినప్పటికీ, పరిస్థితిని గమనించిన జాహెర్ తన ఆటోను రివర్స్ చేసి నిందితుడిని వెంబడించారు. పారిపోతున్న నిందితుడి బైక్ను ఆటోతో ఢీకొట్టి కిందపడేశారు. అనంతరం నిందితుడు కర్రతో దాడి చేయడానికి ప్రయత్నించినా జాహెర్ వెనక్కి తగ్గకుండా ప్రతిఘటించారు.
అదే సమయంలో గస్తీ పోలీసులు అక్కడికి చేరుకోవడంతో నిందితుడు పోలీసుల చేతికి చిక్కాడు. ఘటన అనంతరం ఎలాంటి ప్రతిఫలం ఆశించకుండా జాహెర్ తన పనికి వెళ్లిపోయినట్లు పోలీసులు తెలిపారు.
ఈ ఘటనలో అసాధారణ ధైర్యం ప్రదర్శించిన మహమ్మద్ జాహెర్ను హైదరాబాద్ పోలీస్ కమిషనర్ వీసీ సజ్జనార్ బంజారాహిల్స్లోని తన కార్యాలయంలో ప్రత్యేకంగా సన్మానించారు. ప్రశంసాపత్రంతో పాటు నగదు బహుమతిని అందజేశారు.
“నేరం జరుగుతుంటే చూస్తూ ఉండిపోవడం కాదు, దానిని ఎదిరించడమే బాధ్యతగల పౌరుడి లక్షణం” అని సీపీ సజ్జనార్ పేర్కొన్నారు. నిందితుడు మహమ్మద్ సోహేల్పై ఇప్పటికే 16 క్రిమినల్ కేసులు ఉన్నట్లు పోలీసులు వెల్లడించారు.
మహిళను కాపాడేందుకు ప్రాణాలకు తెగించి ముందుకు వచ్చిన ఆటోడ్రైవర్ జాహెర్పై నగరవాసులు ప్రశంసల వర్షం కురిపిస్తున్నారు.

An auto driver in Hyderabad displayed extraordinary courage by chasing and helping police catch a chain snatcher who allegedly targeted a woman during an early morning walk in Begum Bazaar. Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar later honoured the auto driver for his brave act.
According to police, the incident occurred during the early hours of March 4 when Manju Omlata and her daughter-in-law were out for a morning walk in the Begum Bazaar area. At that time, Mohammad Sohel, a rowdy-sheeter from Dabirpura, allegedly attempted to snatch the gold chain from the woman.
Hearing the victim’s screams, auto driver Mohammad Zaheer, who was passing through the area, immediately reacted. Though he had already crossed the spot, Zaheer quickly reversed his auto and chased the accused.
Police said Zaheer rammed his auto into the accused’s bike, causing him to fall. Despite reportedly being attacked with a stick by the accused, the auto driver resisted and continued to hold him back until patrolling police personnel arrived at the scene.
The accused was subsequently taken into custody. Officials stated that Zaheer quietly left the spot after completing his work without expecting any reward or recognition.
Recognising his bravery, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar honoured Mohammad Zaheer at his office chamber in Banjara Hills on Tuesday. He was presented with a commendation certificate and a cash reward.
Speaking on the occasion, Sajjanar said citizens should not remain silent when crimes occur and praised Zaheer for setting an example of responsible citizenship. Police officials also revealed that the accused rowdy-sheeter already has 16 criminal cases registered against him.
The courageous act of the auto driver has drawn widespread appreciation from residents across Hyderabad.
