Joseph Vijay impressed Assembly members with his maiden speech in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, as his humorous explanation about the Speaker’s chair tradition went viral on social media.
During the second day of the newly convened Assembly session, TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Speaker, while M. Ravishankar was chosen as Deputy Speaker. Following parliamentary tradition, Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin escorted the Speaker to the chair.
Addressing the House, Vijay explained the historical reason behind the practice of physically escorting the Speaker to the chair. He said many parliamentary traditions followed in India originated from Britain.
According to Vijay, the Speaker’s position in early British parliamentary history was considered highly risky because the Speaker had the responsibility of conveying Parliament’s decisions to the King. If the King felt the Speaker acted against royal interests or displayed bias, severe punishment could follow, including execution in some historical instances.
As a result, people were reportedly reluctant to accept the Speaker’s post, leading to the tradition of “dragging” or escorting the Speaker to the chair. Vijay’s narration drew laughter from Assembly members and quickly gained traction online.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also stressed that the Assembly should function with dignity and fairness. He stated that all political parties, regardless of their numerical strength, must receive equal respect in the House.
