Revanth Reddy Seeks 21-Year Minimum Age to Contest Assembly & Lok Sabha Polls

జెన్ జీ (Gen Z) యువత ఆశయాలకు అనుగుణంగా చట్టసభల్లో వారికి ప్రాతినిధ్యం కల్పించాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందని ముఖ్యమంత్రి రేవంత్ రెడ్డి పేర్కొన్నారు. శాసనసభ, లోక్సభ ఎన్నికల్లో పోటీ చేసే కనీస వయోపరిమితిని ప్రస్తుతం ఉన్న 25 సంవత్సరాల నుంచి 21 సంవత్సరాలకు తగ్గించేలా పార్లమెంట్లో చట్ట సవరణ చేపట్టాలని కేంద్రాన్ని కోరారు.
ఆగస్టు మొదటి వారంలో తెలంగాణ శాసనసభ, శాసనమండలిని ప్రత్యేకంగా సమావేశపరచి ఈ అంశంపై తీర్మానం ఆమోదించి కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వానికి పంపనున్నట్లు వెల్లడించారు.
నీట్ వంటి పరీక్షల్లో లోపాలు, ప్రశ్నాపత్రాల లీకేజీలు, విద్యార్థుల ఆత్మహత్యలు, యువత ఆందోళనల నేపథ్యంలో “యువతే దేశం – దేశమే యువత” పేరుతో హైదరాబాద్లోని పీవీ మార్గ్ పీపుల్స్ ప్లాజా నుంచి ఇందిరాగాంధీ విగ్రహం వరకు నిర్వహించిన కొవ్వొత్తుల ర్యాలీలో ముఖ్యమంత్రి పాల్గొన్నారు.
ఈ సందర్భంగా మాట్లాడుతూ, 21 ఏళ్ల వయస్సులోనే ఐఏఎస్, ఐపీఎస్, ఐఎఫ్ఎస్ అధికారులు అవుతున్నప్పుడు ఎమ్మెల్యేలుగా ఎందుకు పోటీ చేయకూడదని ప్రశ్నించారు. అలాగే రాజ్యసభ ఎన్నికలకు కనీస వయోపరిమితిని 25 సంవత్సరాలుగానే కొనసాగించాలని సూచించారు.
దేశ భవిష్యత్తును నిర్మించేది యువతేనని, వారి అవసరాలు, అభిప్రాయాలు చట్టసభల్లో ప్రతిబింబించేలా అవకాశం కల్పించాల్సిన బాధ్యత ప్రభుత్వాలపై ఉందన్నారు. యువతే దేశ భవిష్యత్తు కావడంతో వారికి విధాన నిర్ణయాల్లో కూడా భాగస్వామ్యం కల్పించాలని అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు.
మాజీ ప్రధాని రాజీవ్ గాంధీ 61వ రాజ్యాంగ సవరణ ద్వారా ఓటు హక్కు వయోపరిమితిని 21 నుంచి 18 సంవత్సరాలకు తగ్గించిన విషయాన్ని గుర్తు చేశారు. అలాగే మాజీ ప్రధాని పి.వి. నరసింహారావు హయాంలో స్థానిక సంస్థల ఎన్నికల్లో పోటీ చేసే కనీస వయోపరిమితిని 21 సంవత్సరాలకు తగ్గించినట్లు ప్రస్తావించారు.
జర్మనీ, బ్రిటన్ వంటి దేశాల్లో 18 ఏళ్లు నిండిన వారు చట్టసభలకు పోటీ చేసే అవకాశం ఉందని, సింగపూర్లో 21 ఏళ్ల వయస్సులోనే ప్రధానమంత్రి అయ్యే అర్హత ఉంటే భారతదేశంలో కూడా అలాంటి అవకాశాలపై చర్చ జరగాలని పేర్కొన్నారు.
దేశంలో జెన్ జీ జనాభా సుమారు 30 శాతం ఉన్నప్పటికీ చట్టసభల్లో వారి ప్రాతినిధ్యం ఒక శాతం కూడా లేకపోవడం ఆందోళనకరమని వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. రాబోయే రోజుల్లో యువత గళం చట్టసభల్లో మరింత బలంగా వినిపించేలా కృషి చేస్తామని హామీ ఇచ్చారు.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has called for reducing the minimum age to contest Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from 25 to 21 years to ensure greater representation of Gen Z in legislative bodies.
He announced that the Telangana Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council would be convened in a special session during the first week of August to pass a resolution urging the Centre to amend the relevant law.
The Chief Minister participated in a candlelight rally titled “Youth is the Nation – Nation is the Youth”, organised from People’s Plaza on PV Marg to the Indira Gandhi statue in Hyderabad. The rally highlighted concerns over alleged irregularities in examinations such as NEET, paper leaks, student suicides, and youth protests.
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy questioned why individuals can become IAS, IPS, and IFS officers at the age of 21 but are not eligible to contest Assembly or Lok Sabha elections. He proposed reducing the minimum age for Assembly and Lok Sabha elections to 21 years while retaining 25 years for Rajya Sabha elections.
He said the youth should play a greater role in policymaking, as they represent the future of the country. According to him, governments must ensure that young people’s aspirations are reflected in legislative institutions.
The Chief Minister recalled that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi reduced the voting age from 21 to 18 through the 61st Constitutional Amendment. He also referred to reforms introduced during former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao’s tenure that reduced the minimum age for contesting local body elections to 21 years.
Citing examples of Germany, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, he argued that India should also consider expanding opportunities for young leaders to enter legislative institutions.
He noted that although Gen Z accounts for nearly 30 percent of India’s population, its representation in legislatures remains negligible, and assured that efforts would continue to strengthen the voice of youth in democratic institutions.
