English: AI Creates 16 New Viruses: Scientists Achieve Major Breakthrough

AI researchers have designed 16 previously unseen bacteriophages using the generative AI model Evo, marking a significant development in AI-assisted biotechnology. The researchers say the viruses target bacteria rather than humans, while the work also highlights the need for stronger biosafety and regulatory safeguards.

Researchers from Stanford University and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard conducted the study using Evo, a generative AI model capable of analysing patterns in DNA. The findings were published in a leading scientific journal.

The team used the genetic structure of a bacteriophage — a virus that infects bacteria — as a template and asked the AI model to generate thousands of new viral genome designs. Around 300 of these designs were synthesised and tested in the laboratory, with 16 found to be capable of functioning as living viruses.

A key objective of the research is the potential application of bacteriophages against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As some bacteria develop resistance to existing drugs, treating certain infections has become increasingly challenging. Because bacteriophages can target specific bacteria, researchers believe such AI-designed viruses could eventually contribute to therapies such as phage therapy.

Evo is an AI model trained to identify and analyse patterns in DNA. Its ability to work with genetic sequences from a large number of organisms could expand the use of AI in biological research.

At the same time, the ability to use AI to design new viral genomes raises important biosafety concerns. Experts stress that laboratory safeguards, monitoring and regulatory frameworks must keep pace with advances in AI-driven genetic engineering to prevent potential misuse.
