Repair works on the century-old Gandipet (Osman Sagar) conduit supplying drinking water to Hyderabad are progressing at a brisk pace. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is taking steps to complete the repairs ahead of schedule and restore water supply to the affected areas.

The stone-built conduit, which is more than 100 years old, developed leakages at Sabza Colony, Tolichowki and Manikonda. To undertake the repairs, the Water Board announced a 36-hour shutdown from 6 AM on Tuesday, November 3, to 6 PM on Wednesday, November 4.

Officials have expedited repair work on the conduit, which has a capacity of 20 MGD. HMWSSB Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy instructed officials to exercise special caution while repairing the century-old structure and ensure that quality standards are maintained to prevent similar leakages in the future.

He also directed officials to arrange water tankers in areas affected by the shutdown to ensure that residents do not face drinking water shortages. Officials from the Transmission and Operations and Maintenance departments were asked to coordinate closely and continuously monitor the water supply situation.

The Water Board clarified that Hyderabad receives approximately 560 MGD of drinking water every day from various water sources. The current shutdown is restricted to the 20 MGD Gandipet conduit alone.

Water supply from the Krishna, Godavari and Singur-Manjeera sources will continue as usual, the Board stated. It also appealed to consumers to use the available water judiciously until the repair works are completed and normal supply is restored.
