The Telangana government is reviewing drinking water preparedness in Hyderabad and the Core Urban Region amid concerns about the potential impact of El Niño. According to the information supplied, Chief Secretary S. Jayesh Ranjan chaired a review meeting at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat following directions from the Chief Minister.

The meeting focused on preparedness for maintaining drinking water supplies across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area and other relevant municipal regions.

Special Chief Secretary Dana Kishore, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy, municipal commissioners and officials from the Irrigation and Mission Bhageeratha departments reportedly attended the meeting.

The Chief Secretary directed officials to prepare a comprehensive mitigation plan to address potential water supply challenges. He also called for an intensive public awareness campaign encouraging responsible water consumption.

Officials were asked to promote the use of sewage treatment plant (STP)-treated water for non-domestic purposes, including plantation activities, thereby reducing pressure on drinking water resources.

The meeting also emphasised contingency planning to ensure an adequate and uninterrupted drinking water supply across the Core Urban Region. Officials were directed to make sufficient funds available for implementing the necessary measures.

The review highlights the importance of water conservation, alternative water-use arrangements and coordinated planning as authorities prepare for possible weather-related challenges. However, the meeting itself does not establish that Hyderabad will necessarily face a drinking water shortage because of El Niño.
