Hyderabad: Households in Hyderabad are increasingly considering rooftop solar systems to manage electricity expenses, particularly when using power-intensive appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators. The Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana offers eligible residential consumers financial assistance to install rooftop solar systems.
According to the figures provided in the supplied report, Telangana received 44,662 applications under the scheme, of which 29,816 were approved. In the Hyderabad Metro Zone, 4,749 applicants had sought rooftop solar installations with a combined capacity of 22.33 MW by the end of August 2026.
The report states that 3,615 applicants submitted installation details covering 15.70 MW, while inspections were completed for systems totalling 14.43 MW across 3,346 beneficiaries. Subsidies amounting to ₹23.81 crore were reportedly credited to 2,995 beneficiaries.
Who Is Eligible for the PM Surya Ghar Scheme?
Applicants generally need a valid domestic electricity connection and a suitable rooftop for installing solar panels. Eligibility also depends on the scheme’s conditions, including restrictions on receiving another government subsidy for the same solar installation.
Applications can be submitted through the official PM Surya Ghar portal.
Which Solar Capacity Is Suitable for Your Home?
A 1 kW system may suit households with relatively low electricity consumption, while 2 kW or 3 kW systems may be more appropriate for homes with higher demand.
However, running an air conditioner alongside a refrigerator, water motor and other appliances depends on the system’s output, appliance ratings, sunlight conditions and the timing of consumption. A rooftop solar installation does not automatically eliminate electricity bills.
Subsidy Available Under the Scheme
Under the central subsidy structure for eligible residential rooftop solar installations in most states:
- 1 kW: ₹30,000
- 2 kW: ₹60,000
- 3 kW or above: Maximum ₹78,000
The actual assistance is subject to applicable scheme guidelines and installation requirements.
