Hyderabad: Telangana Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao has clarified the government’s position on the newly introduced ‘Privilege Fee’ amid continuing discussions and protests by the Bars and Restaurants Association.

The association has called for the withdrawal of the privilege fee, following which the minister said the new policy would not cause any financial loss to bar owners.

Jupally said Hyderabad is developing rapidly across sectors and that Telangana is issuing bar licences in line with successful excise policies followed in neighbouring states.

According to the minister, the impact of the privilege fee would be limited to a marginal increase for consumers purchasing liquor. He said past experience suggested that higher liquor prices did not necessarily result in a significant reduction in consumption.

The minister also cited liquor revenue figures while explaining the government’s position. He said liquor revenue increased from around ₹10,000 crore during the previous BRS government to nearly ₹36,000 crore, and subsequently reached ₹40,000 crore after the Congress government came to power.

Jupally maintained that the government was functioning in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. He also said there were no technical obstacles such as water shortages affecting liquor production in the State.
