వరదలకు కారణమేంటి?

ఇండిపెండెంట్ పవర్ ప్రొడ్యూసర్స్ అసోసియేషన్ నేపాల్ ప్రకారం, నువాకోట్, రసువా జిల్లాల్లో పనిచేస్తున్న ఎనిమిది జలవిద్యుత్ ప్రాజెక్టులు, మొత్తం 354 మెగావాట్ల సామర్థ్యంతో, అలాగే నిర్మాణంలో ఉన్న మరో ఐదు ప్రాజెక్టులు దెబ్బతిన్నాయి. ప్రభావితమైన ప్రధాన ప్రాజెక్టుల్లో 111 మెగావాట్ల రసువాగఢి, 78 మెగావాట్ల సాంజెన్ ఖోలా, 60 మెగావాట్ల అప్పర్ త్రిశూలి-3ఏ ఉన్నాయి.

A devastating flash flood struck Nepal’s Tibet-border region on Wednesday, killing at least 95 people and leaving hundreds unaccounted for, while sweeping through settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Rasuwa district was among the worst affected areas.
The flood surged through the Bhote Koshi River at around 9 am local time after a sudden rise in water from the direction of Tibet. The torrent first hit areas of Rasuwa and Dhading before spreading downstream towards Nuwakot and other districts, causing extensive destruction along the river corridor.
The Nepal Tourism Board’s preliminary list recorded 384 travellers as missing, comprising 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals. The list included 105 Indian nationals and 37 non-resident Indians, although other later official reporting put the number of missing Indian nationals at 133. Authorities are continuing to verify the whereabouts of those reported missing, so the Indian figure should be treated as provisional until the lists are reconciled.
A number of the missing Indians were travelling for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet. Nepalese authorities, the Tourism Board, Tourist Police, travel agencies and security forces are coordinating efforts to establish the safety and whereabouts of those who were in or travelling through the affected region.
What triggered the flood?
The precise trigger has not yet been conclusively established.
Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal told Parliament that an earthquake struck the Tibet region at 8:37 am, with reports of the flash flood emerging about three minutes later. He said the timing raised the possibility that the tremor may have contributed to a glacial or ice-rock event, but stressed that the sequence still needed to be verified.
A separate preliminary analysis by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, based on satellite imagery, identified an ice-rock landslide near the Nepal-China border, around 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi crossing. The landslide sent a debris-laden surge into the Lhende Khola, which then flowed through Timure into the Bhote Koshi and subsequently the Trishuli River.
Therefore, it would be premature to state that the earthquake definitively caused the disaster. Scientists and authorities are still examining the relationship between the earthquake, the ice-rock movement, possible glacial processes and the sudden river blockage and release.
Major infrastructure damage
The flood destroyed or damaged roads and bridges along the border corridor. Vehicles and goods at the Rasuwagadhi customs area were swept away, while the road linking Betrawati in Nuwakot with the Rasuwagadhi border crossing was damaged at multiple locations. Several concrete bridges were also washed away.
The Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal reported damage to eight operational hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 354 MW, as well as five projects under construction in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Among the major affected facilities were the 111 MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, 78 MW Sanjen Khola Hydropower Project and 60 MW Upper Trishuli 3A.
Rescue operations continue
The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations. Army helicopters have been used to evacuate people from affected areas, while medical teams have been deployed to provide emergency treatment.
Authorities have warned that the danger may not yet be over. Nepal’s flood authorities said water remains blocked upstream and warned that the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli areas could face further flooding. Residents living along riverbanks in several districts have been instructed to move to safer locations and remain alert.
India steps up assistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed India’s readiness to provide all possible humanitarian assistance. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said it was coordinating with Nepalese authorities over the rescue and relief of affected Indian nationals.
The Indian Embassy has issued emergency contact numbers +977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500 for Indian nationals affected by the floods. India has also dispatched an initial consignment of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines to support Nepal’s relief operations.
The disaster remains an evolving situation.
