ప్రపంచ చమురు ధరల పెరుగుదల, ఇంధన వినియోగంపై ప్రధాని Narendra Modi చేసిన పొదుపు సూచనల నేపథ్యంలో ఈ ప్రచారం సోషల్ మీడియాలో విస్తరించింది. కార్ పూలింగ్, ప్రజా రవాణా వినియోగం, ఎలక్ట్రిక్ వాహనాల ప్రోత్సాహంపై ప్రధాని చేసిన వ్యాఖ్యలను ఆధారంగా చేసుకొని పాత వీడియోలను మళ్లీ వైరల్ చేస్తున్నారు.
అయితే ప్రతి ఆదివారం పెట్రోల్ బంక్లు మూసివేయాలని కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం లేదా రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వాలు ఎలాంటి అధికారిక నిర్ణయం తీసుకోలేదని స్పష్టం అయింది. కేంద్ర పెట్రోలియం శాఖ లేదా చమురు సంస్థల నుంచి కూడా అలాంటి ప్రకటన వెలువడలేదు.

Claims circulating on social media about petrol stations being closed every Sunday across several Indian states from May 14 have been clarified as false. Officials confirmed that no such decision has been taken by the central government or state governments.
The rumours gained traction after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged citizens to follow fuel-saving measures amid rising global oil prices and geopolitical tensions. Social media posts linked those remarks to claims that petrol pumps would remain shut on Sundays in eight states, including Telugu states.
However, authorities stated that neither the Union Petroleum Ministry nor oil marketing companies have issued any official notification regarding Sunday closures of petrol stations. Officials also clarified that the viral video being shared online is actually an old news clip from 2017.
At that time, a proposal by a petroleum dealers’ consortium suggested Sunday closures in selected states to reduce fuel consumption, but the proposal was later withdrawn before implementation.
In recent days, a few petrol stations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana temporarily faced supply-related disruptions due to fuel shortages. However, officials said there is currently no statewide shutdown plan for petrol pumps in the Telugu states.
