A major political development unfolded in Tamil Nadu after TVK chief Vijay reportedly failed once again to secure the Governor’s approval for forming the government. Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai on Thursday seeking permission to stake claim to form the government.
According to political sources, Vijay requested the Governor to allow the TVK party to prove its strength on the Assembly floor. However, the Governor is believed to have clarified that government formation cannot be permitted without clear majority support.
Sources indicate that the Governor insisted on the submission of support letters from at least 118 MLAs before inviting any party to form the government. The required majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly currently stands at 118.
Though TVK emerged as one of the largest parties in the election with 108 seats, Vijay contested from two constituencies and may be counted from only one seat, effectively bringing the party’s strength down to 107 MLAs.
Political discussions intensified after reports emerged that Congress extended support through five MLAs. There are also indications that parties like VCK and CPI may support the TVK-led government. Despite these developments, the Governor reportedly maintained that numerical majority must be formally established before any invitation for government formation can be considered.
