Three remarkable Indian heritage sites have been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, bringing international attention to the country’s geological diversity and ancient cultural traditions.

The first site is the Karst-mud-volcano Complex of Baratang in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The area features limestone caves and mud volcanoes, making it significant for geological research and natural heritage conservation.

The second site, Andaman Subduction Volcanoes, comprises Barren Island and Narcondam Island. Barren Island is home to India’s only confirmed active volcano, while the islands offer important opportunities to study volcanic activity, tectonic processes and island ecosystems.

The third addition is the Sirpur Cultural and Archaeological Landscape in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, located along the Mahanadi River. Its archaeological remains include Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries and other historic structures that reflect the region’s religious, architectural and cultural history.

Inclusion in UNESCO’s Tentative List is an initial step towards potential World Heritage recognition. It does not mean that the sites have already received official UNESCO World Heritage status. Further assessment and the formal nomination process would be required for possible inscription on the final list.
