The Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes in Telangana have completed 12 years, bringing renewed attention to the Congress government’s pending promise of providing one tola of gold in addition to financial assistance for eligible brides.
The schemes were launched in 2014 to provide financial assistance to poor families for their daughters’ marriages. Eligible beneficiaries currently receive financial assistance of ₹1,00,116.
There are reports and claims that the Telangana government may introduce a new “one-tola gold” scheme during the Dasara festival and could replace the existing Kalyana Lakshmi arrangement with gold ornaments such as a mangalsutra and bangles.
However, the claim that the government has officially fixed a Dasara launch date has not been independently confirmed in the latest approved major-media reports available today. There is also no verified official announcement confirming that Kalyana Lakshmi will be discontinued and replaced by a separate gold-distribution scheme.
The Congress had promised during the 2023 Telangana Assembly election campaign to provide one tola of gold in addition to the financial assistance under Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak. The gold component, however, has not been implemented so far, according to recent reports.
A Times of India report published on October 3 said BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao and former minister T. Harish Rao marked the completion of 12 years of the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme and raised issues concerning its continuation and the pending gold promise. The report cited their claim that 16.78 lakh families had benefited from the schemes.
Telangana Today has similarly reported that the two schemes have reached 16,78,347 beneficiaries, involving total government expenditure of ₹16,375.87 crore. It also reported that the Congress government continued the cash assistance but that the promised gold component has remained unfulfilled.
Therefore, based on the currently verified information, the reported Dasara launch of a one-tola gold scheme should not yet be presented as a confirmed government decision. An official government order, announcement or implementation guidelines would be required before the launch date and eligibility details can be reported as final.
