The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched Green Water Tanker services to conserve drinking water by using treated wastewater for non-potable purposes. The initiative was inaugurated at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on Sunday to mark the board’s 37th Foundation Day. The services were also launched across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri regions.
The Secretariat currently receives 2.50 lakh litres of drinking water daily, of which approximately 50,000 litres are used for gardening and maintaining green spaces. The water board plans to replace drinking water used for these activities with treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs).
Through this initiative, HMWSSB aims to save 50,000 litres of drinking water every day and reduce the Secretariat’s total drinking water consumption by 20 per cent.
Green Water Tankers will supply the treated water until a dedicated pipeline is completed. According to the board, a special pipeline is planned from a 20-million-litres-per-day (MLD) sewage treatment plant near Hussain Sagar to the Secretariat, with completion targeted within a week.
The initiative is intended to conserve drinking water by redirecting treated wastewater towards gardening, landscaping, construction and other non-potable uses.
