An open letter addressed to Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has raised concerns over the safety of the Komuravelli Mallanna Sagar Reservoir, a key component of the Kaleshwaram project. The letter calls for the immediate suspension of alleged unauthorised blasting activities near the reservoir embankment.

According to the letter, Mallanna Sagar has a storage capacity of 50 TMC and an embankment height of 60 metres. It alleges that large-scale blasting is being carried out for the proposed Musi pump house at a distance of just 200 metres from the embankment, despite restrictions that the letter says prohibit construction and blasting within a 600-metre radius.

Concerns Over the Safety of 60 Villages

The letter states that the reservoir currently holds 12.5 TMC of water. It warns that any damage to the embankment due to blasting could endanger residents of around 60 villages and affect irrigation benefits covering approximately 18 lakh acres, as well as Hyderabad’s drinking water requirements.

It urges the Irrigation Department to stop the blasting immediately, investigate the alleged violations and take strict action against those responsible. It also calls for the proposed pump house work to proceed only after the necessary permissions have been obtained and the reservoir’s safety has been ensured.

These concerns are allegations contained in the letter; the claims about the blasting, applicable restrictions and the risk to the reservoir have not been independently verified.

Demand for Pending Rehabilitation Benefits

The letter also raises the issue of rehabilitation and resettlement benefits for families displaced by the Mallanna Sagar project.

It claims that 90 per cent of the rehabilitation colony work had been completed during the previous BRS government and demands the immediate allocation of the remaining benefits and pending plots in accordance with court directions.

It calls for full rehabilitation of the affected families and warns that the state government and the Irrigation Minister would be held responsible if negligence concerning reservoir safety resulted in damage.
