Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Urges Farmers to Postpone Summer Crops Amid El Niño Concerns

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged farmers to consider postponing summer crop cultivation in view of concerns over El Niño, rainfall deficit, water scarcity and rising electricity demand. He stressed the need to conserve available water and prioritise drinking water requirements.

The Chief Minister reviewed the potential impact of El Niño at Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat in Hyderabad, along with ministers and senior officials. The review covered rainfall conditions, irrigation, drinking water availability, power demand and the possible impact on agriculture and public life.

Revanth Reddy said an all-party meeting would be held after the Dasara festival to discuss the situation and seek suggestions from political parties. An all-party delegation is expected to visit New Delhi in the first week of November to meet the Prime Minister and seek the Centre’s assistance.

Farmers Advised to Assess Water Availability

The Chief Minister cautioned farmers against cultivating paddy without adequate assurance of water availability, warning that crops could dry up and farmers could suffer financial losses. He appealed to farmers to consider postponing one cropping season if necessary.

He also highlighted the need to support landless agricultural labourers who could face a loss of employment. According to the Chief Minister, around 2.5 lakh people are expected to seek work under the rural employment guarantee programme. Officials have been asked to prepare a special action plan to provide employment opportunities.

Reservoir Storage Falls to 200 TMC

Revanth Reddy said reservoir storage had declined to 200 TMC, compared with 462 TMC during the corresponding period last year. He stressed that the available water must be conserved to meet drinking water requirements in the coming months.

The state needs to ensure drinking water supply to approximately 24,000 villages, he said, underlining the importance of careful water management. Officials have also been asked to take precautions to ensure adequate drinking water and fodder for livestock.

Power Demand Reaches 20,000 MW

The Chief Minister said Telangana’s electricity consumption had risen to around 20,000 MW, compared with an average of 15,000 MW over the previous three years. He also highlighted the substantial increase in power demand compared with 2014–15.

The government is making efforts to supply electricity to farmers and industries to the extent possible. The state will assess its power requirements for the coming months and seek additional support from the Centre, he said.

Telangana Seeks Central Assistance

Revanth Reddy urged the Centre to extend financial assistance from disaster relief funds to farmers affected by crop losses. He also sought support to address the anticipated challenges involving water availability and electricity supply.

The Chief Minister appealed to the public not to spread misinformation or believe unverified claims about El Niño. A nodal officer has been appointed to coordinate official communication, while a war room with a toll-free number is planned to provide timely information and monitor the situation.

A subcommittee led by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has been constituted to monitor the developing situation. Chief Minister’s Adviser K. Ramakrishna Rao has been appointed nodal officer for coordinating official information. The Health Department has also been alerted to respond to health concerns arising from severe heat conditions.
