Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply around the clock to protect standing crops amid prevailing dry conditions. He said the coming 20 days would be crucial for farmers and warned that crop losses caused by power shortages would not be acceptable.

The Chief Minister reviewed the state’s rainfall situation, the potential impact of El Niño, electricity availability and drinking water supply with senior officials. After receiving district-wise updates, he expressed strong displeasure over recurring power interruptions and questioned why the situation had not improved despite repeated instructions.

Revanth Reddy also sought an explanation for why the Yadadri power plant was not generating electricity at full capacity despite coal supply arrangements from Naini and Mahanadi. He warned that suspension could be considered against senior officials in the power department if negligence continued.

El Niño Preparedness Across Departments

The Chief Minister directed all government departments to treat the potential effects of El Niño as a crisis requiring preparedness comparable to the COVID-19 response. He called for advance planning to prevent current difficulties from developing into a larger crisis.

Departments were instructed to prepare comprehensive action plans extending until June next year and coordinate their efforts to minimise public hardship until rainfall resumes.

Drinking Water and Fodder Security

The Chief Minister directed officials to make advance arrangements to prevent drinking water shortages. In Greater Hyderabad, he called for treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants to be used for construction and other suitable purposes.

Officials were also instructed to prepare for possible fodder shortages and protect livestock from the effects of adverse weather conditions.

Special Monitoring Officers for Every Mandal

Revanth Reddy directed the appointment of Group-I and Group-II level officers to monitor El Niño-related conditions in every mandal.

Their responsibilities will include tracking rainfall deficits, electricity supply, drinking water availability, crop conditions and fodder requirements. Regular reports must be submitted to the Chief Secretary so that emerging problems can be addressed promptly.

Village Meetings to Raise Public Awareness

The Chief Minister called for statewide village meetings between Dussehra and Diwali to explain the potential effects of El Niño and the importance of conserving water and electricity.

Cultural awareness programmes, including Kala Jathas, were also proposed to help people understand the situation and prepare for possible shortages.

The review meeting was attended by MP Vem Narender Reddy, Chief Minister’s Adviser K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju and senior officials from the electricity, agriculture, finance, panchayat raj, revenue, health, civil supplies, municipal administration, drinking water and groundwater departments.
