Hyderabad City Police have urged the public to remain alert to cybercriminals who threaten people through video calls in the name of “digital arrest” and demand money under the pretext of verification or investigation.
Fraudsters may impersonate police officers or representatives of government agencies and frighten victims with threats of arrest, criminal proceedings or alleged financial irregularities. They may pressure people to remain on video calls and transfer money to avoid supposed legal action.
What Should You Do During a Digital Arrest Scam?
People should immediately end suspicious calls and refuse to transfer money in response to threats. They should never disclose bank account details, one-time passwords, PINs or passwords to unknown callers.
The public should also avoid opening suspicious links or installing applications suggested by unverified callers. Any claim made by a caller about an investigation should be checked independently through the concerned department’s official contact channels.
How to Report Cybercrime
Victims of digital arrest scams and other online financial frauds should contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 without delay.
Complaints can also be filed through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
Anyone who has already transferred money should report the transaction promptly and preserve relevant bank transaction details, phone numbers, messages and screenshots to assist the investigation.
The key precaution is simple: do not panic, do not transfer money under pressure and do not share confidential financial information with unverified callers.
