Hyderabad: Residents of Hyderabad are being advised to remain alert against fraudulent messages claiming that their water connection will be disconnected because of an unpaid bill. Cybercriminals have previously impersonated Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials to target consumers through such messages.

The fraudsters typically claim that a water bill, meter reading or account detail is pending and demand immediate payment. They may then send an APK file through WhatsApp or another messaging platform and ask the recipient to install it.

Installing a malicious APK can compromise a mobile phone and expose sensitive information. Cybercriminals may use access to SMS messages, banking information and one-time passwords to carry out unauthorised financial transactions.

Telangana Today reported in June that a 74-year-old Hyderabad businessman allegedly lost ₹10 lakh after fraudsters posing as HMWSSB officials persuaded him to install a malicious APK to clear a water-bill issue. Police registered a case and investigated the fraudulent transactions.

Residents should therefore avoid clicking unknown links or installing APK files received through unsolicited messages. No one should share OTPs, UPI PINs, card details, CVV numbers or banking passwords with callers claiming to represent the Water Board.

Consumers should verify water-bill information only through official HMWSSB channels. Anyone who has already lost money in a cyber fraud should immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 and report the incident through the official cybercrime reporting system.
