English: Rythu Bima faces uncertainty over the 2026-27 premium, while Telangana plans a new family life insurance scheme.

Telangana’s Rythu Bima scheme has come under renewed focus after reports that the premium for the 2026-27 insurance year has not been paid, raising questions over its continuation beyond August 14. The latest report by 10TV says the scheme may be discontinued as the government plans to introduce a broader family life insurance programme.

Under Rythu Bima, eligible farmers aged 18 to 59 are covered for natural and accidental deaths, with the nominee entitled to an insurance benefit of Rs.5 lakh. The scheme currently covers 42.16 lakh farmers, according to the report.

The issue had also surfaced earlier this year when The New Indian Express reported that LIC had stopped processing claims over pending premium payments. At that time, Rs.441.23 crore was reportedly outstanding and 7,606 claims worth Rs.380.03 crore were pending. The newspaper subsequently reported that Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao said the government had paid the full premium to LIC.

According to the latest 10TV report, the government is planning an Indiramma Family Life Insurance scheme covering families across the State. The report says Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka announced that the new scheme would be launched on November 19, following a household survey and beneficiary identification process.

The transition has raised concerns among farmers about insurance protection during the period before the proposed new scheme becomes operational. Farmers are reportedly seeking continuation of Rythu Bima until the new family insurance programme is implemented.
