Student protests in France have escalated into a wider wave of unrest, with high school students demanding improvements in education infrastructure, better staffing and action on teacher shortages. The movement began in the Paris region before spreading to several parts of the country.
Students have raised concerns over overcrowded classrooms, shortages of teachers and staff, poor school infrastructure and inadequate facilities. University students have also joined or expressed support for the demonstrations in some areas.
According to the latest reports, at least 564 schools were affected by the protests on Friday, while nearly 400 high schools were expected to remain closed. Students blocked entrances at several schools, while some demonstrations resulted in clashes with police.
Police used tear gas in some locations to disperse protesters. In Paris, fires damaged the entrances of two high schools. However, the claim that more than 500 schools were set on fire is not supported by the latest verified reports. Reports instead say that more than 100 high schools suffered severe damage, while fires were reported at some individual locations.
French Education Minister Édouard Geffray said around 170 students had been injured during the unrest. At least 65 school staff members were also reported injured, including 40 school principals.
Authorities also reported nearly 1,949 arrests on Thursday alone. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said around 2,000 people had been taken into police custody since the movement began.
The protests have also triggered a debate over police tactics. Some students and rights groups have accused police of using excessive force, including tear gas, while the French government has stressed the need to maintain public order and prevent violence.
What began as a movement over education conditions has therefore developed into a broader public-order crisis, with school closures, injuries, arrests and clashes reported across France.
