After gaining momentum in the polls, he began pressing both nations toward a peace deal. While Russia initially appeared receptive, things soon shifted, leading to Trump’s growing frustration with Vladimir Putin’s stance. However, Trump’s anger has not remained limited to Russia alone.

Reacting to U.S. threats over India’s oil imports from Russia, the Kremlin accused the U.S. of attempting to create unjust trade pressure. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “These are moral threats. Forcing other nations to cut ties with Russia is not a legitimate or lawful approach.” He added that every sovereign nation has the right to choose its trade partners and act in its own national interest.
Last week, Trump warned of fresh sanctions not just on Moscow but also on its trading partners if Russia did not move toward a peace agreement with Ukraine. India, which continues its energy trade with Russia, also came under Trump’s radar. On August 4 (Monday), he announced plans to impose additional tariffs on Indian imports.
In response, the Indian government released a statement defending its economic independence: “Like every major economy, India takes decisions necessary to safeguard its national interest and economic security.” Indian officials also reminded that it was the U.S. itself which encouraged Russian oil trade when the Ukraine war broke out.
Meanwhile, India also slammed the European Union for its stance targeting Indian oil companies. New Delhi described the move as unfair, noting that many nations continue to trade with Russia, and singling out India was unacceptable. India emphasized that its imports are based on global market conditions.
Interestingly, while Trump increased retaliatory tariffs on several countries, he reduced them for Pakistan. This shift in U.S.-Pakistan ties — unlike anything seen in the past decade — has surprised global observers. However, analysts believe this is part of a broader strategy to increase pressure on India. Trump cozying up to Pakistan, many say, is a clear sign of the lengths the U.S. is willing to go to serve its own interests.
