Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to take advance measures to prevent drinking water shortages in Hyderabad. In view of the potential impact of El Niño and severe drought conditions, he called for continuous monitoring of reservoir levels and water supply systems.
The Chief Minister reviewed drinking water supply, the construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and the utilisation of treated wastewater within the CURE area at the MCRHRD Bodhi Pavilion in Hyderabad.
He instructed officials to ensure that all sewage treatment plants operate at 100% capacity and that water resources are managed efficiently to meet future requirements.
Treated Water to Be Used for Public Infrastructure
Revanth Reddy directed officials to use treated wastewater for maintaining greenery at the Secretariat, Chief Minister’s Office, Outer Ring Road, Metro Rail facilities and other government offices.
Treated water should also be used for maintaining public parks and cleaning roads. He stressed strict enforcement of rules requiring treated water to be used for construction activities.
The Chief Minister called for encouraging private sewage treatment plants and supplying treated water to data centres. He also asked REDCO officials to explore the use of solar power for operating STPs.
Continuous Monitoring of Treatment Plants
The Chief Minister instructed officials to follow advanced technological standards at sewage treatment plants and ensure that water quality is not compromised.
A dedicated officer should be appointed at every plant, and all STPs should be connected to the Command Control Centre for continuous monitoring. HYDRAA was also asked to monitor the performance of these facilities regularly.
Officials were directed to introduce a tracking system for tankers supplying treated water and undertake public awareness campaigns to promote its use.
Orders to Take Effect from November 1
Revanth Reddy directed officials to establish a dedicated toll-free number for treated water supplies and ensure that the instructions relating to STP management and treated water utilisation take effect from November 1.
According to officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, treated water is currently being distributed through Green Water Tankers from 26 STPs. Consumers are charged only transportation costs, while the treated water itself is supplied free of charge, officials said.
Telangana Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju and senior officials from the concerned departments attended the review meeting.
