The Telangana and Maharashtra governments have held discussions on the proposed Tummidihatti Barrage on the Pranahita River, focusing on raising its height and improving irrigation and drinking water access in the Adilabad region. A delegation led by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Sahyadri Government Guest House in Mumbai.

The meeting covered the proposed barrage height, water availability, submergence risks and technical considerations, according to the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office.

Telangana Proposes a Height of 152 Metres

Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy presented the project’s importance and recalled the 2016 agreement that set the proposed barrage height at 148 metres. He explained that Telangana believes this height may not fully meet the region’s drinking water and irrigation requirements.

The State proposed raising the barrage height to 152 metres, citing the potential for gravity-based water transfer, lower dependence on power, operational costs and environmental considerations.

Telangana Offers Compensation for Affected Land

Uttam Kumar Reddy said Telangana was prepared to compensate farmers whose agricultural land in Maharashtra could be submerged by the project. Compensation would follow Maharashtra’s applicable land acquisition rules and compensation policy, according to the account of the meeting.

Revanth Reddy Highlights Adilabad’s Development Needs

Revanth Reddy highlighted the historical and cultural links between the two states and the development challenges faced by tribal communities in the erstwhile undivided Adilabad district.

He referred to Komaram Bheem’s struggle for Jal, Jangal, Zameen and emphasised the need to improve access to irrigation and drinking water. He also said a proposed defence and civil aviation facility in Adilabad could support economic activity and connectivity in border areas of both states.

Fadnavis Agrees to Re-examine the Proposal

Fadnavis responded positively to Telangana’s request to reconsider the proposed barrage height, while stressing that Maharashtra’s interests and its people must not be adversely affected.

He said technical, environmental and administrative aspects needed further examination before a final decision could be reached.

Officials’ Committee Proposed

Fadnavis proposed a committee led by the irrigation department’s senior secretaries from both states to examine the barrage height, water availability, submerged land, compensation and other technical issues.

The Central Water Commission is also expected to undertake studies within its remit, according to the Telangana CMO’s account. Officials and technical experts from both states are expected to continue consultations and work towards an action plan.

The positive response marks a step towards further discussions, but it does not amount to final approval for construction at the proposed 152-metre height. Further decisions will depend on technical assessments and the necessary administrative processes.
