తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రంలో వ్యవసాయ కనెక్షన్లు మినహా మిగిలిన అన్ని విద్యుత్ వినియోగదారులకు ప్రీపెయిడ్ స్మార్ట్ విద్యుత్ మీటర్లు ఏర్పాటు చేయడానికి రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం గ్రీన్ సిగ్నల్ ఇచ్చింది. ముఖ్యమంత్రి Revanth Reddy అధ్యక్షతన జరిగిన కేబినెట్ సమావేశంలో కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వ రీవ్యాంప్డ్ డిస్ట్రిబ్యూషన్ సెక్టార్ స్కీమ్ (RDSS)లో చేరేందుకు ఆమోదం తెలిపింది.
కేబినెట్ సమావేశం అనంతరం మంత్రి Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy మాట్లాడుతూ, వ్యవసాయ కనెక్షన్లకు ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లోనూ ప్రీపెయిడ్ స్మార్ట్ మీటర్లు అమలు చేయబోమని స్పష్టం చేశారు. విద్యుత్ పంపిణీ వ్యవస్థను బలోపేతం చేయడం, ట్రాన్స్మిషన్ నష్టాలను తగ్గించడం, డిస్కంల ఆర్థిక పరిస్థితిని మెరుగుపరచడం ఈ పథక ప్రధాన లక్ష్యమని తెలిపారు.
స్మార్ట్ మీటర్ల ఏర్పాటుకు అయ్యే మొత్తం ఖర్చును కేంద్ర, రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వాలు 60:40 నిష్పత్తిలో భరిస్తాయని అధికారులు వెల్లడించారు. వినియోగదారులపై అదనపు భారం ఉండదని స్పష్టం చేశారు.
గత బీఆర్ఎస్ ప్రభుత్వం కేంద్ర విద్యుత్ శాఖ, తెలంగాణ ప్రభుత్వం, సదరన్ పవర్ డిస్ట్రిబ్యూషన్ కంపెనీ మధ్య త్రైపాక్షిక ఒప్పందం కుదుర్చుకున్నప్పటికీ అమలు ముందుకు సాగలేదని మంత్రి పేర్కొన్నారు. అసెంబ్లీలో చర్చించిన తర్వాతే కాంగ్రెస్ ప్రభుత్వం ఈ నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నట్లు తెలిపారు.

The Telangana Cabinet has approved the implementation of prepaid smart electricity meters for all power consumers in the State except agricultural connections. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad.
The State government also approved joining the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), aimed at strengthening the electricity distribution system and reducing transmission losses across Telangana.
Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy clarified that prepaid smart meters would not be implemented for agricultural power connections under any circumstances. He stated that the scheme mainly focuses on improving the financial stability of DISCOMs and enhancing operational efficiency.
Officials said the entire cost of installing smart meters would be borne jointly by the Central and State governments in a 60:40 ratio, ensuring that consumers would not face any additional financial burden.
The Minister also noted that the previous BRS government had already signed a tripartite agreement with the Union Power Ministry and the Southern Power Distribution Company, but the process was not taken forward. The present government reportedly approved the proposal after discussions in the Assembly.
