Political debate has intensified in West Bengal following allegations that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls influenced the recent Assembly election results in the state.
The controversy emerged after the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress suffered a major electoral setback, while the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory with 206 seats.
According to reports, more than 90 lakh voter names were removed from electoral rolls during the revision process conducted before the elections. Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that the large-scale deletion of voters affected the election outcome and claimed that the party was not rejected by the people.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders also questioned the revision process, alleging that it benefited the BJP politically.
However, several political analysts argued that similar voter list revision exercises have been conducted earlier in multiple states across India and are not unique to West Bengal. They pointed out that even BJP-ruled states witnessed significant voter additions and deletions during election roll revisions.
Analysts further noted that in several constituencies where voter deletions were reportedly high, Trinamool Congress candidates still managed to win.
