In a remarkable example of grassroots democracy, Kalita Majhi, a domestic worker, has been elected as an MLA from the Ausgram constituency in West Bengal.
Contesting as a BJP candidate, Kalita Majhi secured a total of 107,692 votes and defeated her opponent Shyama Prasanna Lohar by a margin of 12,535 votes. She had earlier contested in the 2021 Assembly elections but faced defeat. However, the party reposed faith in her again, and she emerged victorious this time.
For nearly two decades, Kalita worked as a domestic help, managing her livelihood with modest earnings. Even after being declared as an MLA candidate, she continued her household work while actively campaigning among the public. Her husband works as a plumber, and she has one son.
Her strong connection with local voters and consistent grassroots presence helped her gain significant support. Her victory is being widely appreciated as a symbol of democratic empowerment.
In the larger political landscape, the BJP secured a sweeping victory in West Bengal, winning 206 out of 293 seats. The Trinamool Congress won 81 seats, while Congress managed to win two seats. These results mark a major political shift in the state.
