The case involves Jitendra (Jitesh) Patel, who practiced in Atlanta. According to investigators, he allegedly conducted unnecessary diagnostic tests, including electromyography (EMG), on patients who did not require them. The probe also revealed that electrodes were placed on patients’ genitals to send electrical impulses as part of these tests, raising serious ethical concerns.
Authorities further stated that minor treatments were falsely billed as complex surgical procedures to government healthcare programs, leading to significant financial gains. The alleged scheme prioritized profit over patient care, officials said.
The malpractice came to light after whistleblowers, including former employee Lorraine Perumal and physician Himanshu Agarwal, filed complaints with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Following an investigation, authorities confirmed the fraud, leading to a civil settlement.
As part of the agreement, Patel will pay $14 million, with approximately $2.94 million (around ₹27 crore) allocated to the whistleblowers. US officials emphasized that fraudulent billing and unnecessary medical procedures are serious violations and warned of strict action against such practices.
